이자(利子, 문화어: 리자)는 경제학 및 법률 용어로서 원본인 유동자본(화폐)의 대부로부터 발생하는 수익으로서, 원본액과 사용기간에 비례하여 일정한 이율에 따라 지급되는 금전 기타의 대체물을 의미한다. 길미, 변리(邊利), 변(邊), 이금(利金), 이문(利文)이라고도 한다.
개념
첫째, 이자는 원본채권의 유효한 발생을 전제로 한다. 이자는 이자채권에서 발생하는 것이며, 이자채권은 원본채권(원본의 반환을 청구하는 채권)의 존재를 전제로 하기 때문이다.(대부업법 제8조 참조). 따라서 종신정기금(민법 제725조)ㆍ건설이자(상법 제463조)와 같이 원본채권을 전제하지 않는 것은 이자가 아니다.
