가마우지(cormorant)는 가마우지과에 속하는 조류를 총칭하는 말이다. 전 세계에 32종이 분포하며, 가마우지의 종류로는 민물가마우지·바다가마우지·쇠가마우지 등이 알려져 있다. 대부분 해안에서 생활하나 큰 강이나 호수에서도 볼 수 있다. 크기가 큰 종류는 몸길이가 70㎝ 이상이다. 가마우지 중에서 가장 크고 흔한 종은 민물가마우지로, 뺨이 흰색이고 몸길이는 약 90㎝이다. 둥지는 나뭇가지와 해조류를 이용하여 절벽의 바위턱에 만든다. 가마우지는 물 위에서 헤엄을 치면서 먹을 물고기를 찾는다. 물고기를 발견하면 물 속으로 잠수하여 물갈퀴가 달린 발로 힘차게 헤엄을 쳐 물고기를 잡는다. 잡은 물고기는 물 위로 가지고 올라와서 먹는다.
