形相(けいそう ギリシャ語 エイドス)とは、哲学用語で質料に対置して使われる用語。日本語としては、「ぎょうそう」とも読めるが、哲学用語として使う時には「けいそう」と読む。

アリストテレス哲学における「形相」

「質料」(ヒュレー)と「形相」(エイドス)を対置して、内容、素材とそれを用いてつくられたかたちという対の概念として初めて用いた人は、古代ギリシアの哲学者アリストテレスである。彼の『形而上学』の中にこういう概念枠組みが登場する。

プラトンが観念実在論を採り、あるものをそのものたらしめ、そのものとしての性質を付与するイデアを、そのものから独立して存在する実体として考えたのに対し、アリストテレスは、あるものにそのものの持つ性質を与える形相(エイドス)は、そのもののマテリアルな素材である質料(ヒュレー)と分離不可能で内在的なものであると考えた。

プラトンは元来イデアを意味するのにエイドスという言葉も使っていたのだが、アリストテレスが師の概念と区別してこの言葉を定義した。

大雑把に言えばプラトンのイデアは判子のようなものであるが、アリストテレスのエイドスは押された刻印のようなものである。イデアは個物から独立して離在するが、エイドスは具体的な個物において、しかもつねに質料とセットになったかたちでしか実在し得ない。

エイドスが素材と結びついて現実化した個物をアリストテレスは現実態(エネルゲイヤ)と呼び、現実態を生み出す潜在的な可能性を可能態デュナミス)と呼んだ。今ある現実態は、未来の現実態をうみだす可能態となっている。このように、万物はたがいの他の可能態となり、手段となりながら、ひとつのまとまった秩序をつくる。

アリストテレスはまた、「魂とは可能的に生命をもつ自然物体(肉体)の形相であらねばならぬ」と語る。ここで肉体は質料にあたり、魂は形相にあたる。なにものかでありうる質料は、形相による制約を受けてそのものとなる。いかなる存在も形相のほかに質料をもつ点、存在は半面においては生成でもある。

質料そのもの(第一質料)はなにものでもありうる(純粋可能態)。これに対し形相そのもの(第一形相)はまさにあるもの(純粋現実態)である。この不動の動者(「最高善」=プラトンのイデア)においてのみ、生成は停止する。

すなわち、万物はたがいの他の可能態となり、手段となるが、その究極に、けっして他のものの手段となることはない、目的そのものとしての「最高善」がある。この最高善を見いだすことこそ人生の最高の価値である、としたのである。
