娼妓是一種以提供陪伴及娛樂（其目的可能包括精神上或肉體上的滿足）為主的行業，傳統上許多娼妓以奉客、表演為主，具有較高的藝術素養，即「賣藝」不「賣身」或不輕易「賣身」的交際花；但由於娼妓業工作的演變，近代以來的漢語中，娼妓一詞常特指提供性服務的女性性工作者；此外，雖然較為少見，許多社會中也存在著男性的娼妓。無論是否「賣身」，娼妓在世界上多數社會被視為低等階層。
近代至現代除了打正旗號賣淫的性工作者外，還有些女性從事陪侍工作，也屬於廣義的娼妓。例如伴舞的舞女、卡拉OK夜總會的伴唱、夜總會的坐檯小姐等，這些娼妓未必會與客人發生性行為，但有些於陪侍時容許客人觸摸身體。
一些地區的傳統交際花在現代社會變成傳統藝術的傳承者，她們現在的工作範圍也去除了古代的性意味，如日本的藝妓、朝鮮的妓生。
