Posun lze chápat jako „režim jízdy“ železničních vozidel. Na rozdíl od vlaku však není jeho jízda řízena přímo jízdním řádem, ale osobou způsobilou k řízení posunu. (výpravčí, posunovač, strojvedoucí, vlakvedoucí atd.) Posunový díl obvykle neopustí obvod dopravny, ve které se posun provádí. V opačném případě se jedná o posun mezi dopravnami (PMD), který musí sjednat výpravčí sousedních dopraven, protože posunový díl vjede na trať a musí být zajištěna její volnost podobně jako v případě vlaku.
Z technických a bezpečnostních důvodů jsou rychlosti při posunu omezeny.
Při najíždění na vozidla (např. za účelem svěšení) nesmí být překročena rychlost 5 km/h
