Een polyglot is iemand met een hoge graad van taalbeheersing in verschillende talen.
Wanneer iemand zich vlot kan uitdrukken in twee verschillende talen is die persoon tweetalig. Men spreekt soms van een hyperpolyglot als iemand zes of meer talen vloeiend kan spreken.
Toch is het kennisniveau van talen zeer relatief en bestaat er geen echt objectieve meetmethode om vast te stellen of iemand een taal beheerst. Alleen al het verschil in maatschappelijke positie kan veel uitmaken voor de mate waarin iemands kennis van een taal leidt tot communicatie op het normale taalniveau van een bepaalde sociale klasse. Ook de wenselijke woordenschat en aanpassing aan een tongval of dialect speelt hierbij een rol. Er valt hierbij ook nog een onderscheid te maken tussen de lees-, schrijf- en spreekvaardigheden.
