L'abiogenèse, dans son sens le plus courant, désigne l'étude de la génération de la vie à partir de la matière non vivante. Aujourd'hui, le terme est utilisé principalement en biologie, dans le contexte de l'origine de la vie.
On trouve une description de l'abiogenèse déjà chez Démocrite, qui aurait selon Diogène Laerce mentionné que les atomes auraient pu en s'assemblant donner naissance aux premiers êtres vivants. Dans l'Organon, Aristote mentionne l'apparition spontanée au bout de quelque temps des moisissures sur les aliments, des mites sur la laine et des souris là où on entasse de vieux vêtements de façon prolongée, donnant naissance au concept de génération spontanée. Il faudra attendre jusqu'au XIXe siècle pour que celui-ci soit invalidé par Pasteur avec l'expérience de ses ballons à col de cygne et sa découverte de la pasteurisation.
La question demeurait de savoir comment était née initialement la vie sur Terre. Deux théories voisines coexistent aujourd'hui :
