Une abaya est le vêtement porté « au-dessus des autres » chez les musulmans. Ample et léger, elle permet de supporter plus facilement la chaleur en été.

Elle est la forme traditionnelle du hijab ou de la robe islamique modeste. L'abaya traditionnelle est de couleur noire. Elle est soit un grand carré de tissu drapé à partir des épaules ou de la tête soit une longue robe. Elle doit couvrir le corps sauf le visage, les pieds et les mains. Elle peut être portée avec le niqab, un voile couvrant tout le visage sauf les yeux.

En Arabie saoudite et dans les pays du golfe Persique, elle est la tenue musulmane la plus portée. Au Moyen-Orient (Liban, Syrie, etc.) ainsi qu'au Maghreb (Maroc, Algérie, Tunisie, etc…), elle est un vêtement mixte, utilisé aussi bien par les hommes que par les femmes.
