O abacá, também conhecido como cânhamo-de-manila, cânhamo-de-manilha, alvacá, bananeira-de-corda, bananeira-de-flor e bandala (Musa textilis) é um tipo de bananeira que porporciona também uma das mais importantes matérias-primas para a cordaria. Os seus frutos não são comestíveis. Com as fibras dela extraídas, são feitos os cabos usados em todo o mundo para amarrar os navios nos portos. É usado de preferência a qualquer outra fibra porque, além de sua enorme resistência à tensão, é dificilmente deteriorável sob a ação da água, doce ou salgada. As fibras dessa musácea tropical têm de dois a quatro metros de comprimento e procedem dos pecíolos de suas folhas. A plantação tem o aspecto de um bananal e as plantas são cortadas pela base antes que cheguem a frutificar. O abacá é empregado também na manufatura de cordéis, sacos, linhas e redes de pescar, tapetes, papel de embrulho e pasta de papel. As ilhas Filipinas têm sido, desde tempos imemoriais, o principal centro produtor. Durante a II Guerra Mundial, as plantações dos EUA na América Central, iniciadas na década de 1920, supriram o mercado aliado. Alguns países da região são hoje grandes produtores.
