Der Singular (nach lateinisch (numerus) singularis ‚in der Einzahl stehend‘, zu lat. singulus ‚einzeln‘; Abk. Sg.) bezeichnet in der Grammatik einen Numerus und repräsentiert die Einzahl. Er ist der grundlegende Numerus und geht allen anderen Formen voran. Am häufigsten wird der Singular dazu benutzt, einzelne Exemplare eines Lebewesens oder einer Sache zu bezeichnen; die Pluralform bezeichnet in diesen Fällen zwei oder mehr Exemplare.
In anderen Sprachen existieren auch noch weitere Numeri wie zum Beispiel Dual, Trial und Paukal. Ein Substantiv, das nur im Singular gebräuchlich ist (Milch, Obst, Regen), wird Singularetantum genannt; ein Substantiv, das im Plural gebräuchlich ist, Pluraletantum. Der Singular zum Pluraletantum heißt Singulativ.
Sonderformen des Singulars sind der generalisierende, der kollektive und der repräsentative Singular.[1]
Beim generalisierenden Singular steht die Formulierung: „ein/e x“ oder „der/die/das x“ für: „alle x“ oder „jeder/jede/jedes x“.
In der Formulierung „das Haar“ (kollektiver Singular) ist nicht ein einzelnes Haar gemeint, sondern die Gesamtheit der Haare, z.B. (auf dem Kopf) eines Menschen. Bei dem Ersatz der Bezeichnung für eine Menge in ihrer Gesamtheit durch die Bezeichnung für ein Einzelexemplar dieser Menge handelt es sich um eine „quantitative Metonymie“.
Der repräsentative Singular bezeichnet mehrere Personen, die einen Teil einer Gesamtmenge bilden.
Weiter gibt es noch den Singularis materialis, bei dem durch das Subjekt bedingt der Plural angebracht wäre, das Verb aber trotzdem im Singular steht.
