Nicholas Christian "Nick" Newman is a fictional character from the CBS Daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless. He has been portrayed by actor Joshua Morrow since June 21, 1994, but he was earlier portrayed by various child actors, including John Nelson-Alden, a son of the show's former writer, Kay Alden, Griffin Ledner and several others. The character was developed by the show's creator William J. Bell. Nicholas was given the onscreen birth date of December 31, 1988,[1] as the child of supercouple Victor Newman and Nikki Reed. His birth year was revised by the series to 1978 in 1994,[2] when the character returned as a 16-year old teenager.[3] Within the series, his middle name, Christian, was given to him as an ode to his father, whose birth name is Christian Miller.[3] As of 2008, Nick has been confirmed to be about 35 years old.

  Characterization

In 1999, when Nick and his wife Sharon reunited after an infidelity of Nick, then head writer Kay Alden said: "This has been a long time coming for Sharon and Nick. For the last several months, there's been a lot of stop-and-go — and mixed messages — between them. But now the feelings they have for each other are finally clear."[4] Morrow said of the court battle for Sharon's daughter Cassie: "He didn't think it would be an issue. He wasn't prepared for it. Nick has a fiery personality. If you attack him, he's going to fight back. Nick doesn't see the situation to get back into Sharon's heart. He's doing it because he knows it's right."[4] Morrow added: "Nick has accepted Cassie as his daughter. He loves her as much as he loves Noah. She's an incredible child and Nick is crazy about her."[4]

In 2012, on his character, Morrow said: "I liked that they have made Nick a calming influence on Phyllis. He is much more mature now with his decisions. He's got a very practical view of the world, and I like that he's kind of become a steady character on the show. I might not be as splashy or flashy [a part] to play as Adam, but I really, really like Nick. He's a good dude. He's very supportive."[5] On the topic of his wife Phyllis being charged for attempted murder for a nearly twenty-year-old incident, Morrow said: "There's not many husbands that would put up with what he has! Think about what Phyllis is doing—it's absolutely bananas! But he loves this woman, and he knows that she made some terrible mistakes back in the day when she was younger. [He'll be there for her] assuming that she trusts him enough to help her through it. That's the No. 1 issue for Nick. He's willing to put up with just about everything and stand by her—as long as she lets him help her instead of making all these ridiculous decisions and being sneaky and lying to him. Right now I think his will is being tested, because there are so many things that are being thrown at him."[5] When asked if a reunion with Sharon was on the horizon, Morrow said: "Maybe they'll want to address the Nick/Sharon relationship again. But as an actor, I don't know how in the world they could put them back together anytime soon. I can't fathom how Nick could look past the stuff she's done and re-establish their relationship, so I don't have high hopes for 'Shick' fans. I feel badly for them, because they've been so loyal. But for the time being, that ship has sailed!"[5]

  Storylines

  Birth and Childhood

When Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) were headed for divorce, they conceived a child. Nicholas was born on New Year's Eve of 1988. Nick grew up with two prominent men in his life, his father Victor and his stepfather Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), both leaving an impact on his life. He was sent to boarding school at the age of ten along with his older sister, Victoria Newman (Heather Tom, currently played by Amelia Heinle).

Marriage to Sharon, infidelity and Cassie's death

Joshua Morrow and Sharon Case as Nick and Sharon. The pairing are considered a soap opera supercouple.

Nick briefly dated Amy Wilson, who his mother accepted, but he soon fell deeply in love with her friend, Sharon Collins (Sharon Case). Nick even fought her ex-boyfriend, Matt Clark, in order to be with her, and he ended up severely hurt. Nick thought that Sharon was his virginal girlfriend; however, it was later revealed that she had a child with her ex-boyfriend, Frank Barritt, and she gave her daughter up for adoption when she lived in Madison, Wisconsin. Matt revealed this secret to Nick. He and Sharon split briefly, but love brought them back together. For revenge on the couple, Matt raped Sharon. Matt was later was shot, and Nick was the main suspect. He was sent to jail for a fifteen year sentence, however it was later revealed that Amy was the one who shot Matt because he had also raped her. Nick was set free, and he legally wed Sharon immediately. Nikki despised Sharon, and she saw her as nothing but a gold digger. Sharon stopped taking birth control because she felt insecure about her marriage, and she got herself pregnant. Noah Christian Newman (currently played by Kevin Schmidt) was born prematurely and nearly died at birth. Sharon's best friend, Grace Turner (Jennifer Gareis), and her boyfriend, Tony Viscardi, tracked down Sharon's long lost daughter, Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes), thinking Noah would die. When Noah survived, Grace didn't tell Sharon that Cassie was her child, and she decided to pursue Nick for herself. Eventually, the truth came out about Cassie's maternity, and Nick adopted her. Grace had sex with Nick while he was drunk and thought she was Sharon. However, Nick learned the truth, and he swore Grace to secrecy. Grace blackmailed Nick using the knowledge of their one night stand. While assisting Nick on a business trip to Denver, Grace seduced him, and they had sex again. Sharon discovered their secret, and she left Nick. However, they reunited when Cassie's adoptive mother, Alice Johnson, tried to claim back Cassie.

In 2000, Matt Clark returned to Genoa City with a reconstructed face, using the identity of "Carter Mills". He tried to rape Sharon twice, but he was unsuccessful. Matt eventually succeeded with the rape, and he later drove off a cliff with Tricia McNeil (Sabryn Genet) in order to escape the Newmans. Sharon ended up pregnant, and she gave birth to a stillborn baby girl after falling during a fight with Nick. Nick thought that Matt was the baby's father; however, Nick was in fact the father of the baby girl. Sharon then left Nick, blaming him for the loss of their daughter. They reunited, but their reunion was short-lived when Sharon had an affair with Diego Guittierez after she saw Nick kissing another woman whom she believed to be Grace Turner. Nick and Sharon split up when the affair with Diego was revealed. Nick wanted to reconcile with Sharon, but he found her kissing his father. Sharon left town when the kiss became public. While Sharon was away, Cassie had an accident and nearly died. Sharon returned soon after, and Nick forgave her for the kiss with Victor. A man named Cameron Kirsten had slept with Sharon and beat her up while she was staying out of town. He returned to town, and Sharon believed she had killed him one night after hitting him with a bottle and hiding his body. However, he did not die, and he returned to haunt Sharon. He was sent to jail eventually, and finally, Nick and Sharon returned to their normal life. Nick also scored big at work, having been promoted to CEO of Newman Enterprises.

Meanwhile, Cassie was now fourteen, and she wanted to hang out with her older friends like Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) in order to be like them. She persuaded her parents to let her go out to a movie with her old friend. In reality, she was sneaking off to a party to see her crush, Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei). Cassie found Daniel drunk at the party after Lily broke up with him. An underage Cassie drove Daniel home, and they got into a car accident. No one remembered that Cassie was driving the car, and Daniel spent the night in jail. Cassie was in critical condition at the hospital for several days until she remembered that she was the driver. She escaped from the hospital, still in critical condition, in order to find Daniel and tell him the truth. She collapsed upon seeing him, and when she was brought back to the hospital, she only lasted for a few hours before she passed on. At her funeral service, Daniel's mother, Phyllis Summers Abbott (Michelle Stafford), caused a stir, and Nick forced her to leave the ceremony. Nick then left his position as CEO of Newman Enterprises in order to hunt Daniel down. After returning unsuccessfully, Nick ended up helping Daniel during his trial for vehicular manslaughter. He provided evidence that proved that Cassie was the driver of the car, and Daniel was freed. After the trial, Nick and Sharon grew further apart, both still grieving over Cassie's death. Nick decided to return to Newman Enterprises as co-CEO with his sister, Victoria.

Marriages to Phyllis and recent developments

Nick became attracted to Phyllis, and they began an affair. Sharon found out months later, and got a legal separation from Nick. Cassie appeared to him in a dream, telling him that he would have another baby girl with Sharon. After Nick and Sharon reunited, it was revealed that Phyllis was pregnant with his child. Sharon and Nick ended their decade-long marriage, and he married Phyllis, who gave birth to their daughter Summer Newman. Phyllis and Nick moved into the tack house on the Newman Ranch to be closer to Sharon and Noah. Nick and Phyllis had plans to legally marry in Genoa City, but they were postponed after Phyllis' involvement in the sudden death of Drucilla Winters (Victoria Rowell). Phyllis, Sharon and Drucilla fought near a cliff, causing both Dru and Sharon to fall off, but Sharon survived. Sharon later married Nick's former stepfather and Phyllis' ex-husband, Jack Abbott.

Nick was in a plane crash, and he was presumed dead. Months later, he returned alive, but he only remembered being married to Sharon. Sharon and Nick shared a kiss; however, when Nick regained his memory, he and Sharon resumed their respective marriages to Phyllis and Jack. The two couples then joined forces in a magazine venture, entitled Restless Style Magazine. Nick managed to buy the magazine from Jack and Sharon after countless arguments. Victor remarried to his daughter's friend, Sabrina Costelana (Raya Meddine), much to his children's dismay. Sabrina was pregnant with Victor's child, but she died in a car accident, and Victor left town. Nikki Newman also married criminal David Chow (Vincent Irizarry), who died in the same accident. Victor was feared dead, but he returned to Genoa City in hiding. Nick traveled to Paris to find his father, and he ran into Sharon who was in Paris with Noah on a school trip. Nick and Sharon began to bond again, and they later kissed, which Phyllis witnessed. The kiss made Phyllis and Nick's marriage extremely fragile, and from then on, Phyllis became insecure about Sharon and Nick's relationship.

In 2009, Noah got into a skating accident after falling through ice. He was rescued by Brad Carlton (Don Diamont), who died while saving Noah. Nick went to tell Sharon, who was at the Abbott cabin at the time. They had a passionate outburst that culminated in the two having sex. Phyllis found out about Nick's affair, but she didn't end their marriage. Nick vowed to continue his marriage with Phyllis, however had made love with Sharon at the cabin again in April. Sharon later became pregnant with three possible fathers: Nick, Billy or Jack. Nick found out that he could have possibly fathered Sharon's child, and he left Phyllis. Nick told Sharon that she was his one true love and that he wanted her back. However, when Summer became ill, Sharon pushed Nick to go back to Phyllis, and she told everyone that Jack was her baby's father, even though she knew that Nick was the father after a DNA test. After Summer recovered, the truth was revealed that Nick was the father. Sharon's baby was stolen at birth by Adam Newman, who gave the baby girl to Ashley Abbott. Ashley was then married to Victor, and Adam tricked her into having a hysterical pregnancy. Both Sharon and Ashley went into labor at the same time, which gave Adam the perfect opportunity to finish his scheme. Sharon and Nick grieved for their "stillborn" child, but she began a relationship with Adam, not knowing what he had done to her. They quickly married, angering Nick, who still loved Sharon. Also during this time, Victor was shot three times, and he left town for rehabilitation with Nikki. Nick and Phyllis' marriage broke down when he consistently chose to aid Sharon's needs. Nick and Phyllis divorced, as did Sharon and Adam after Sharon and Nick's daughter, Faith Newman, was revealed to be alive and returned to her rightful parents. Sharon and Nick began to get closer after bonding over their daughter, and they later had made love.

Nick and Sharon became engaged, and they planned to get married on Thanksgiving. Despite this, Sharon found herself lured back into Adam's arms, and she cheated on Nick with Adam. Nick was extremely angry at Sharon, and he broke off their engagement, despite the fact that Sharon soon realized that she wanted Nick. At the same time, Adam got arrested for the "murder" of his wife, Skye Newman. Sharon returned to Genoa City with Adam in order to help him get freed from jail. Nick did not want Faith near Adam, so he decided to sue Sharon for full custody of their daughter, in which he succeeded. Nick then began a relationship with Diane Jenkins (Maura West), however Diane married Victor for stability in her life. Around this time, Nick was involved in a lawsuit against Victor for all he had put him, Victoria and their half-sister, Abby Newman (Marcy Rylan), through. Adam's name was cleared, but Sharon was arrested for murder in the first degree when she traveled to Hawaii to find Skye. She succeeded in her search, but during an accidental fight, Skye fell into a volcano and died, all witnessed by Victor. Sharon was found guilty, but Adam helped her escape and go on the run. Phyllis and Nick went after her, and they reunited and had sex. Sharon was carjacked, and the carjackers got in a car accident, allowing everyone to believe that Sharon was dead. Nick was devastated by this news, actually believing that the woman he had loved his entire life was dead.

Sharon later returned home alive; and was sentenced to 30 years in prison but released months later. Nick also continued his sexual relationship with Diane; however she was murdered. Along with several others, Nick was a main suspect for the crime, however it turned out his mother, Nikki, killed her in self-defense. Nick later began a relationship with Sharon's lawyer, Avery Bailey Clark (Jessica Collins), who also happened to be Phyllis' estranged younger sister. Phyllis and Nick reunited after his break-up with Avery. Nick continued to fight with Sharon over their daughter, forcing Sharon to file a restraining order against Adam. Sharon listened to Nick and filed for the restraining order, but Nick took Faith away from her when he found out that she was engaged to Victor in order to have stability in her life. Victor helped Sharon seek joint custody of Faith, which was granted. Nick vowed to get his daughter away from Sharon, though things have softened between the two. He was however, outraged when Sharon married Victor. Nick and Sharon decided to work together at Newman Enterprises. Phyllis discovers she is pregnant and is proposed to by Nick, who says he wants to marry her regardless if she were pregnant or not; she has since lost the child.
