Las fortificaciones (del latín fortificatio -ōnis) son edificaciones militares construidas para servir como defensa en la guerra. El término viene de fortis (fuerte) y facere (hacer).
La palabra fortificación también se refiere a la práctica de incrementar la capacidad defensiva de un lugar por medio de obras defensivas, valga la redundancia.
Los humanos han edificado obras defensivas durante miles de años, en una gran variedad de complejos diseños, tal vez las han edificado como un buen y seguro mecanismo de defensa.
Muchas instalaciones militares son conocidas como fuertes, aunque no siempre estén fortificadas. Los fuertes de gran tamaño pueden ser clasificados como fortalezas, los medianos como fuertes y los más pequeños como fortines.
