Elmina, sur la côte ghanéenne est aujourd'hui un petit port de pêche de 20 000 habitants issu du premier comptoir européen du Golfe de Guinée. Les forts Saint-Georges et Saint-Jacques rappellent l'ancienneté de l'implantation européenne et l'âpreté des luttes dans ce qui a été un des plus grands centres africains de la traite des esclaves.

  Histoire

Le premier comptoir, dit de la Mine en raison de la grande quantité d'or qu'il y trouvèrent à acheter, a été fondé en 1471 par Jean de Santerem et Pedro Escobar de retour de Sao Tomé et le fort Saint-Georges construit en 1482 par une décision du roi du Portugal, Jean II, prise l'année précédente. Il est resté la tête de pont du Portugal en Afrique de l'Ouest, jusqu'à ce que la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes occidentales s'en empare en 1637 avec l'aide de l'Eguafo voisin. Pour protéger la forteresse nouvellement conquise, les Hollandais firent construire un deuxième fort, le fort Saint-Jacques ou Saint-Jago entre 1666 et 1671.

  Bombardement britannique (13 juin 1873)

Du XVIIe siècle au début du XIXe siècle, la traite des esclaves fait la fortune de la cité. En 1872, Elmina est cédé aux Britanniques.

Son lagon est aujourd'hui un port de pêche actif.

Elmina a servi de cadre au réalisateur Werner Herzog pour son film Cobra Verde, avec Klaus Kinski dans le rôle principal.

Lettris

Lettris is a curious tetris-clone game where all the bricks have the same square shape but different content. Each square carries a letter. To make squares disappear and save space for other squares you have to assemble English words (left, right, up, down) from the falling squares.
