Delirium tremens
Il delirium tremens è una fase acuta di delirio che si può verificare in soggetti affetti da alcolismo cronico, a seguito di astinenza protratta per alcuni giorni, o come sindrome di astinenza dovuta alla brusca interruzione di trattamenti farmacologici a base di benzodiazepine e barbiturici.
Si manifesta con sintomi quali allucinazioni, tremore, sudorazione; inoltre si osservano clinicamente aumento della frequenza cardiaca, febbre, diminuzione di elettroliti nel sangue e disidratazione.
Il delirium tremens da alcolismo, se non trattato tempestivamente, può favorire infezioni broncopolmonari e causare gravi lesioni al sistema nervoso centrale. Tradizionalmente il trattamento clinico prevedeva la somministrazione di piccole quantità di etanolo; tuttavia questa pratica è stata dimostrata scorretta, ed è oggi sostituita con l'uso di benzodiazepine.
Morti famose
Anche se non è del tutto accertato, Edgar Allan Poe morì in seguito a una crisi di delirium tremens, come riportò la diagnosi del nosocomio di Baltimora nel quale morì il 7 ottobre 1849.[1]
